Around the House

Lots has been happening around the house lately.  The dogs got some fancy new cages.

To celebrate, Heidi and I made them some fancy new name plaques.

  The dogs love them ;-)

Our poultry numbers have been up and down lately - with the downs also resulting in downs in dog biscuit consumption!  We currently have 6 hens and 2 indian runner drakes that Darryn uses to train his working dogs.  Three of the hens are ex-battery farm hens that we have given a new lease of life to.  Although after 18 months in our care their laying is now quite sporadic - attributed to the unnaturally high production requirements of their early life.  Luckily I don't base all their worth on their egg laying abilities.  Instead, I fill their cage with hay and organic matter which I leave them to scratch up until it is composted, which I then remove to my vege garden.  Much easier than running my own compost pile - they do all the hard yakka for me.  I also give them little stints in the garden to help control all the unwanted creepy crawlies ruining my vege crops.

It's not all work - they get cuddles too!

The Indian Runners are put through their paces twice a week - with Darryn's pups rounding them up over and over again.

There's always something to do in the garden, these two are very quick to spot an empty wheelbarrow, often catching a ride on my return trip from the garden rubbish pile.

We have been reaping the rewards of a great winter season in the vege garden.  Heidi loved discovering all the potatoes...

We are also patiently waiting for these beauties to ripen.

Sometimes it's all too much - here's Rhys nursing his big sister to sleep after a big session around the house :-)

Lots To Be Done

The kids and I have been promoted to 2IC with Poppa having some R&R after a shoulder replacement.  Whilst he'll be back better than ever before we know it - there's still jobs to do.  The kids have slotted in nicely as Darryn's right hand helpers.  They do talk a bit more than Poppa and Darryn is being endlessly challenged as to 'why' he does everything he does!

We have helped fix fences in the creek without getting too wet.

Helped pull out rouge lantana plants, of course everyone had to have their gloves on.

Helped fix gates.

Checked troughs.

Mustering of course.

Measured the rain (6mm).

Prepared well in advance for Bobcat rides.

Had a Bobcat ride.

Watched the grass grow while checking ready to calve heifers.

Practised gate opening skills.

All this work hasn't left much time for hair brushing!!
